Breton-19, Jamieson-26, Eimer-1061c, Adams 14.2. 38mm. 17.3g. Signed T. WYON JUN. A lead trial piece (John W. Adams’ Obverse 2) for the small-size (38mm) George III Indian peace medal with the leaves in the crown of laurel pointing to TI in GRATIA. Regular-issue 1814 Indian peace medals were struck in three sizes (76mm, 60mm, and 38mm) for widespread distribution to Indigenous allies during and after the War of 1812. John Adams writes in The Indian Peace Medals of George III or His Majesty’s Sometime Allies (1999): “The medals of 1814 are noteworthy for the quality of both design and execution. Thomas Wyon’s ‘old head’ obverse is a truly majestic rendition of the subject.”
This unique offering was clearly struck to test the new die for that “majestic rendition” in the 38mm format. It was obviously satisfactory, as this exact design was adopted for distribution. The present die trial is listed in Adams’ census (#8 under ‘Small Medals Dated 1814’) as “Private Collection, New York. Trial piece in lead (not seen).”
