Breton-27, Jamieson-33, BHM-1975, Eimer-1347a. 75.7mm. 152.3g. Plain edge. Signed W. WYON R.A. Original suspension loop at 12 o’clock. Writing in “Medals of the Prince of Wales Visit,” published as part of Canada’s Money (ANS, 1995), Scott Miller describes these medals as having been given out by the Prince of Wales to a group of about 150 to 200 Indigenous attendees at a gathering in Sardinia, which was the terminus of the Grand Trunk Railway. Per Miller, “After the addresses were given, the Prince presented each of the chiefs with a large silver medal in commemoration of the visit. … Three sizes of silver medals were presented, 3 inch, 2 3/8 inch, and 1 1/2 inch, and the distribution correlated size with rank.” Each medal was from an earlier 1840 issue with the addition of the Prince’s plumes in the left obverse field and the date 1860 in the right obverse field. This is an example of the largest medal, and the size that is usually found. The surfaces are almost uniformly deep grey with small rim bumps and a trace of light high-point friction over the devices.
