McLachlan-372, Betts-Unlisted, Breton-40. 40.9mm. 15.1g. Plain edge. Unsigned. Design similar to last, except the reverse does not show the shell proceeding from the mortar toward the rampart and there are four vessels rather than five. These medals commemorate the British capture of Louisbourg, when 190 ships under the command of Admiral Edward Boscawen orchestrated their 48-day attack in June and July 1758. The battle was a momentous victory for the British during the Seven Years’ War (Quebec City and Montreal would fall soon after), widely celebrated through the issuance of medals like this. Brass-gold and steel-blue surfaces are well-detailed and impressively preserved for the type with light rub over the high points. No distracting marks to mention.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
