McLachlan-375, Betts-406, Breton-41. 37mm. 13.6g. Plain edge. Unsigned. The reverse is similar to the the preceding lot, but the scene is reversed with five vessels, and the legend reads LOUISBOURG HARBOUR. On the obverse, Admiral Boscawen holds a baton in his right hand. While McLachlan (1886) described all the Boscawen medals he had seen as “more or less corroded or worn, or both,” this example is decidedly better than that. Design incompleteness may be as much a result of strike as it is of wear given the relieve of the devices and the generally poor quality of production. Both sides are largely olive-gold with splashes of steel-blue colour. Just a bit of roughness around the rims. Struck from rotated dies.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
