McLachlan-378, Betts-407, Breton-43. 26mm. 4.4g. Plain edge. Unsigned. Obverse similar to the preceding lots. Reverse shows an office kneeling and surrendering his sword with the legend I SURRENDER PRISONER around and the date 1858 in the exergue. From Canadian Numismatics (1886): “This medal differs from the others of the series in the inscription and the design on the reverse. Although Louisbourg is not mentioned, there is no doubt that it refers to the capture of that stronghold, as no other place capitulated to Boscawen during the year 1758.” Condition is excellent for the type with strong detail, clean, sharp rims, and partly glossy brass and steel surfaces. We sold a comparable example in our Fall 2016 Coin Expo auction, which realized $3,480.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
