McLachlan-128, Betts-422, Breton-32, Eimer-674. 37.5mm. 24.1g. Plain edge with vertical striations, as made. Signed GOSSET M. KIRK F. Struck in coinage alignment. A medal commemorating the death of the British General James Wolfe at the Plains of Abraham on September 13, 1759. London medallist John Kirk (1724-1776) engraved a number of medals in the Seven Years’ War series, few of higher artistic merit than this one. The design was based on a wax model by Gosset, whose name appears next to Kirk’s on Wolfe’s bust. This example in copper (others exist in silver) compares favourably to the Adams example and is decidedly nicer than the Ford piece, which was cleaned. Violet, ice-blue, and golden accents in the glossy fields complement rich mahogany-brown surfaces. An essentially unimprovable example.
