McLachlan-125, Betts-421, Breton-51, Eimer-673. 40mm. 28g. Plain edge. Unsigned (by John Pingo). Yet another entry in the Society Promoting Arts and Commerce series of Seven Years’ War medals. As with the Montreal Taken and Canada Subdued medals, the engraver employed the popular Judea Capta motif with a defrocked French soldier bound to the stump of a tree with Victory right. Lr. 864 is known in copper and silver. This copper example, like its Montreal Taken counterpart also in the sale, is a Gem. Glowing copper-orange colour surrounds the devices on each side with an overlay of violet and blue patina over the exposed fields. Spectacular quality and worth a premium bid.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
