Breton-Unlisted. 45mm. 43g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. The Hiram Mills medal was endowed by its namesake, an American-born philanthropist who moved to Montreal in 1861 following the outbreak of the Civil War. Mills died in August 1882 and bequeathed between $42,000 and $45,000 to McGill University, leaving little to his wife. The Major Hiram Mills endowment was initially a medal, “awarded for a subject to be chosen by the faculty from year to year, a chair in the Classics department, and a scholarship.” In recent years, the medal has been awarded to the top student for biology. For more information, consult Jacob Lipson’s article, “The McGill University Hiram Mills Award Medal” in the July-August 2018 issue of the Canadian Numismatic Journal. This example, formerly graded MS63 Deep Prooflike NGC but removed from its holder (NGC insert is included) boasts eye-catching contrast and lightly hairlined yellow-gold surfaces. Razor-sharp and unmarked edges. Original red Wyon box is included with this lot. XRF analysis revealed a purity of 23K gold (95.57 Au, 2.42% Ag, 2% Cu).
