Mexican/Bouquet Sou. - CH BL-51. N.N. 6.86 grams. This piece, which combines the obverse of a Canadian bouquet sou, Br. 705, struck from very worn die, combined with a copy of the State of Chihuahua 1/4 real of 1855. Maurice Gould is the first to record the piece in the Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine for December, 1957. He calls it a muling, but as the Mexican side is only an imitation, presumably of the 1855 Chihuahua piece of 1855, it is certainly not so. The two other Chihuahua issues of 1833-35, and for 1846 are similar, but the clear difference in the case of the bow and the direction of the arrow suggest that this is the piece that was copied. The worn, likely discarded Belleville dies of the bouquet sou, combined with dies that were probably created after 1855 is curious. Two small crescent clips, and one longer straight clip. Fine, the copper is reddish in colour, and is dark in centre on obverse, the reverse has some tarry spots, dissimilar to the dark obverse centre. Though Maurice Gould had the discovery piece, which was the only known specimen at the time, five or six further pieces have been encountered since that time. Sold with a copy of the 1788 Massachusetts cent, and a 1/4 real of Chihuahua. Ex-Buth Coll.
