Further information regarding this lot:

The influx of prisoners into Canadian prisoner-of-war camps during World War II began in earnest during the East African campaign of 1940-41. The large number of Italians captured by the British overwhelmed the prisoner-of-war camp system in Great Britain. The British Government asked Canada to assume part of the burden of housing the prisoners. Largely as a result of this request, Canada instituted a camp system that eventually grew to 26 camps which housed over 35,000 prisoners of war. The commanding officer of each camp was responsible for printing and issuing scrip for use within his camp. There was no general issue of prisoner-of-war scrip was to purchase goods in the camp canteens. Not all camps issued notes.
