Inc. In 1914 as Northern Electric, this company manufactured telephones for the Canadian marketplace and was originally controlled by Western Electric and ATT. Bell Canada gained control in the 1950s. Renamed Northern Telecom, the company went public in 1973 and continued to make telephones and other telecomunications products. With the internet boom of late 1900s, Nortel as it became acquired Bay Networkds and provided products geared to the new internet companies. Nortel became a market darling with the stock reaching $124 and the company with a value of $400+ billion. Alas, it would not last, Nortel stock collapsed to $.50/share as the company's sales and earnings declined and a series of accounting scandals ensued. Nortel went bankrupt in 2009 and was finally wound down in 2017. This is onr of Canada's longest and most complex bankruptcies. This is a major piece of Canadian Financial History.
