This medal was awarded to soldiers suppressing the Riel Rebellion of 1885 in western Canada. It was originally only issued to men living west of Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) who served. Initially it was not given to NWMP but in 1900 they received the medal. Besides receiving the medal, recipients got 320 acres of land and $80.00. The medal is circular, 1.25 inches in diameter and silver.
The obverse has Queen Victoria facing left and the reverse has printed Northwest/1885/Canada within a wreath of maple leaves There were 1753 issued with the Saskatchewan bar like this specimen. Rim inscribed "Pte John Paul P.A.V."
