Northwest Company Replica - Northwest Company replica, bronze. A very tolerable likeness of Breton 925. This handsome piece was made from dies used to strike the centre portion of a souvenir medal with an outer ring which was ordered by the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association to celebrate its 1950 convention in Centralia, Washington. The original medals are 40.5 mm in diameter and were struck in brass and in brass with a bronze centre. (There were also a few off-metal strikes.) See The C.N.A. Bulletin, 1, 4 (May 1950): 3-4; and CNRS Transactions, vol. 37 (Summer 2001): 40. The dies were engraved by Frank Sarson at Pressed Metal Products in Vancouver. It is estimated that not more than 100 of the original convention medal were struck. Examples can be viewed on the current PNNA web site. The present piece is the centre portion only, measures 27.25 mm in diameter and weighs 10.84 grams. Plain edge; straight reverse. How the replica being offered here came about is unclear. It has upset rims and appears to have been struck quite independently of the original medal. Ex: Joe Lepczyk Sale, no. 55, Nov. 25, 1983, lot 665. Uncirculated. It would make a fine companion piece to the superior example of Br 925 in the preceding lot.
This lot is part of the extensive George H. Thomson Collection.
