Nova Scotia Brass Piece - Co. 316. Br. 876. Brass.

CH NS-5A2. 7.15g. Fine+. XRF: 85.903% Cu, 13.560% Zn, 0.464% Pb, 0.073% Ag. Incontrovertibly a brass piece, and heavily so at that, but the composition of this a minor puzzle: the circulation 1856 Mayflowers were struck in bronze, an alloy of copper and tin. The utter absence of tin in this piece, even as a trace element, challenges a popular hypothesis that “brass” pieces like this are merely the result of poor mixing of alloy. Ex:Henderson.
