Consisting of the Canadian Medal of Bravery and the Lifesaving Medal of the Order of St. John in Bronze. As of the end of 1993 only 57 awards of the bronze medal had been made in Canada, by the end of 2000 this number had risen to 86. At the age of seven, Shawn Leckey may possibly be the youngest recipient of this medal. Award of the Medal of Bravery was approved on 25 April 1983 and the award was announced on page 3889 of the Canada Gazette issue of 30 April 1983. The Canada Gazette citation reads as follows "When his younger sister fell into the Nasonworth Stream, near Fredericton, eight year old Shawn immediately crawled out on the thin ice and grabbed her. Unable to pull her in, eleven year old Chris stretched out beside him and the two were able to pull her to safety." The Register of Canadian Honours (ISBN 1-895021-01-4), on page 306, contains the following account of the rescue. "Late in the afternoon of December 29, 1981, 8 year old Shawn Leckey and 11 year old Chris Rector imperilled their own lives near Fredericton, NB. On their return from school, the children had gone to play on the ice under the Nasonworth Bridge, thinking it was safe. Six year old Stephanie had wandered out on the frozen surface, and the ice gave way under her weight. Seeing his sister submered in the cold water, young Shawn at once went to her aid. He crawled out on the thin ice and grabbed the girl by the arms but was not strong enough to drag her out. Though the ice was cracking all around them, Chris Rector approached open water on his hands and knees and stretched beside Shawn. In a test of will, the two boys combined efforts and pullled Stephanie to safety." At the age of eight years Shawn Everett Leckey may well be the yougest recipient of either or both of these awards. Both medals are in excellent condition. The Medal of Bravery is still in its presentation case.
