CH UC-1, Charlton Canadian Government Paper Money Catalogue tells us that after the collapse of the 1837 rebellion in Upper Canada, William Lyon MacKenzie, fled to New York state. He set up a "Provisional Government" on Navy Island new Niagara Falls. Navy Island was to serve as a base for predatory raids against the established government in Upper Canada. MacKenzie issued scrip when he was frustrated trying to purchase supplies. The notes were allegedly payable 4 months after date at Toronto City Hall. They were based on nothing more substantial than the possible successful invasion of Upper Canada that was highly unlikely. To give some credence to the notes, MacKenzie had the signature of David Gibson forged on the notes. Gibson was a wealthy supporter of MacKenzie but also a fugitive at large with a 500 £ bounty on his head. The notes hardly ever circulated and MacKenzie was ridiculed on both sides of the border. The notes are very rare, particularily the one dollar specimen. This is a very interesting historical piece that should command a commensurate high price.
