TOKENS OF UPPER CANADA - Br 721. Copper Company of Upper Canada silver "restrike"

Uncirculated proof. 12.16 grams. Attractive iridescent toning, with some hairlining. While there is little doubt that the "restrikes" of Br 721 were marketed by J. Rochelle Thomas in 1894 to feed collector demand, the origins of the dies remains a topic of some dispute, as the "restike" dies are qute distinct from those of the 1794 originals. Articles by David Vice (Spink Numismatic Circular, March-June 1977) and J.E. Everingham (Warren Baker List No. 28 and 29, 1977) argue that the dies are poor late-Victorian imitations of the originals, falsely passed off by Thomas at the time as being a century old. John Ford elsewhere argued, on decidely speculative and circumstantial grounds, that they originate from a rejected set of dies contemporary to the 1794 originals, which were renewed for the restrikes (see New Netherlands Sale 60, notes to lot 56). Whatever the origin, the "restrikes" are scarce in silver, with Thomas claming to have struck a mere 12 in that metal.

Note: this lot is part of The Richard Cooper Collection.
