68.2mm. 194.1g. CARON FRERES stamped on edge. Signed A. LALIBERTÉ. Hébert (1575-1627) was the first permanent settler in what would become Quebec City. According to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Hébert built a wooden house and then a stone house, which he occupied in 1620. They “stood where the inner courtyard and parking lot (near the Rue des Remparts), respectively, of the Petit Séminaire de Québec are located in the early 21st century. Hébert cleared the land and sowed a plot with good grain, vegetables, and various herbs. He also planted grapevines and apple and plum trees.” The obverse celebrates Hébert, while the names of other early Canadian colonists are listed on the reverse.
