SIR FRANCOIS C.S. LANGELIER HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS
Featured here is a Quebec offering of monumental importance.
Langelier was a prominent lawyer, judge, college professor, politician, Lieutenant Governor and author of important legal works. Born in 1838, he graduated from Laval University and later taught there as a popular law professor known for clarity, preciseness and simplicity in explaining legal matters. He had the ability to clearly understand law and make others appreciate it. He was elected at the municipal, provincial and federal levels of government and his accomplishments in Quebec City as Mayor are legendary. He often locked horns with the Roman Catholic church over issues involving the church interfering in politics once winning one such battle in the Supreme Court of Canada. He was appointed Lieutenant Governor in 1911 serving until 1915. He was knighted in 1907 and made a Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England in 1912 and Knight of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1913.
CONTENTS INCLUDE:
1. The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George in red Moroccan leather case containing a large wax red seal with attached parchment document accompanied by three official documents granting the Order, two signed by King George V of England. (1913)
2. The seal with attached parchment in a tubular case of the Knighthood of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. (1912)
3. Two documents from convents it appears done in beautiful calligraphy with borders of colorful illustrations undoubtedly hand painted both to His Excellency.
4. A guest register in red Moroccan leather titled Le Lieutenant - Governeur et Lady Langelier Registre Des Visiteurs. There is basically a Who’s Who of prominent Quebec residents signatures within
From 1911 until 1915.
5. A red Moroccan leather bound book titled Instructions For His Honour The Lieutenant Governor Of The Province Of Quebec. It features all the proper protocols and has three wonderful colour pages of dress uniforms.
6. A complete set of Cours De Droit Civil legal reference books authored by Langelier. Although written from 1905 to 1911, they are still considered a modern reference by Quebec lawyers and judges. A scarce set beautifully bound and signed by Langelier.
7. A framed autographed photo of Sir Wilfred Laurier who appointed Langelier as Lieutenant Governor.
8. Two unframed photos of an official opening ceremony and one of the Lieutenant Governor’s residence.
9. Two books titled Prominent Men of Canada ( 1892) in poor shape and one titled Les Fetes du Troisieme Centenaire de Quebec 1608-1908 (1911). Both books signed by Langelier.
