Wood 9a variant. Lees 5 Var. Ship/Ships Colonies & Commerce. - CH BL-26 var. N.S. 3.70 grams. The sharpness of the edge and glossiness of this coin indicate that it is about as struck. There are old scratches in the field, particularly noticeable on the obverse, also a small clip above pennant. The letters S/C/CO RCE are visible; the E of COMMERCE shows only partly, and weakly. The same die cracks occur on both Lees 5 and this variant, indicating the one is derived from the other. The appearance of the two pieces would lead one to believe that this is the last state, but the strong pennant on this variety, compared to the condensed version on Lees 5 complicates any decision I can make. Chris Faulkner likely has the answer. This coin demonstrates the sorry state of the copper coinage of the 1830s. With the weight being about 40% of that legally assigned, and the copper struck from dies so deteriorated, it would have been unrecognizable as anything more than a disc.
