1722-H [La Rochelle Mint] John Law Half Sol. Very Good, a well-worn example from a rare mint, which struck this denomination for just this and the following year and the Sol in 1722 only – meaning it didn’t strike any at all during Law’s year in power. It is interesting that the first year La Rochelle struck this denomination was also the final year it coined the copper 9 Deniers issues (offered next in this sale), and it could be that the mint had surplus copper planchets on hand since it struck only a small fraction of the 9 Deniers issues that it was authorized to mint. Smith notes just 5 examples of this date and mint in the 255 Half Sols he studied, split between two different varieties, this the second one he illustrates, with the engraver’s mark above the tip of the bust. Quite rare.
