68.1mm. 129.26g. Bee and BRONZE on edge (Paris Mint mintmark used between November 1860 and December 1879). Signed. J.C. CHAMPLAIN. This gorgeous Art Nouveau medal, which depicts the exposition fairgrounds on the reverse, features a cartouche on that side with the name of the recipient: LAMINOIRS DE MONTREAL, or, in English, the Montreal Rolling Mills Company. The firm was founded in 1868 and was situated along the Lachine Canal in St. Henri. According to Parks Canada, it “gradually acquired all the nail factories and other companies specializing in iron and steel products. They finally merged with four other companies to form the Steel Co. of Canada in 1911, commonly known as Stelco.” The surfaces of this award medal are gilt, and each side is bright yellow-gold without a trace of the underlying bronze showing through. Housed in its original case of issue.
