Charlton-1990-5 (Variation 1). 61.9mm. 68.46g. Plain edge. Cast by Joseph Hall Iron Works. Commemorating the Knights of Labour demonstration in Oshawa on August 13, 1883. According to paperwork supplied by Scott Douglas, “The employees of the Joseph Hall Works of Oshawa manned a float in the parade that was set up as a moulding shop. Here the men made medals in sand cast moulds that were previously prepared. Molten iron was poured into the casts, the metal hardened, was broken out of the mould and quenched in cold water. The medals were then thrown out into the crowds on the street who were watching the parade.” The deep grey surfaces are rough and porous, as made, with some reddish colour within parts of the design. A popular issue that is seldom offered. The Michael Joffre piece realized $252 in our April 2022 sale.
