McLachlan-277. 34.1mm. 23.91g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. R.W. McLachlan provides the following commentary on this medal in Canadian Numismatics (1886):

“In Ontario, law students who have not received a university degree, have to pass through a course of five years’ study, and go before the Examining Board of the Law Society semi-annually. This medal is given annually in gold, silver, and bronze at the final examinations. It was first given in 1881. The design is artistic and very appropriate, representing the Magna Charta as the foundation of English law, surmounted by a beaver, the Canadian emblem, and supported by Strength and Justice.”

This piece and the next represent the first two representatives of Lr. 1566 this cataloguer has come across. The Jeffery Hoare Auctions Sale #6 included both a gold and a copper example, but we can find no recent appearances. Neither the Hendler nor the Joffre holdings included Lr. 1566. Perfectly glossy mahogany-brown surfaces reveal elements of blue, violet, green, and rose in the fields. Certainly worth a healthy bid.
