McLachlan-153, Breton-165, Charlton-3320-15-1. 45.1mm. 44.52g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. R.W. McLachlan writes in Canadian Numismatics (1886): “The Montreal Young Men's Christian Association claims to be the first organized association of the kind. This medal, therefore, not only commemorates the erection of its building, but records the inauguration of the pioneer of what has become one of the powers of this continent.” The Montreal chapter of the YMCA, which was founded by Sir George Williams, was the first chapter of the organization in North America. The first classes at Sir George Williams University, now Concordia University, were held in the building depicted on the obverse.
Like the Joffre example we offered last year, this is a flawless chocolate-brown representative with glossy, mirrorlike fields that show faint blue and gold accents when rotated. An exceptionally attractive Wyon medal that should appeal to a variety of collectors.
