McLachlan-160, Breton-114. 45.0mm. 46.32g. Plain edge. Signed L. C. WYON. The Chapman medal for Classical Literature and Languages is the first in the McGill medal subseries, funded by Montreal merchant Henry Chapman in 1857 (Sandham, 1872). Although recipients received a gold medal, bronze examples were given to subscribers, donors, and institutions. Prooflikeness remains around the raised devices, while the fields are dusky brown with steel and reddish elements. Traces of original copper colour surround the peripheral reverse lettering. Several small spots of verdigris appear on the obverse.
