42.3mm. 39.24g. Plain edge. Unsigned. The U.S.-Canada arbitration medal commemorates the Netherlands’ King William I’s involvement as arbiter in the New Brunswick-Maine boundary conflict of 1829-1831. The medals were designed by Professor P.O. van Der Chijs and likely struck in Germany. Research by this cataloguer (JL) originally published in the June 2021 issue of the MCA Advisory confirms they were struck in late 1834 and issued in early 1835. Examples were produced in bronze, gilt bronze, and silver, with the former being the usual type seen. This is a pristine proof with glossy mahogany-brown surfaces that reveal accents of blue, violet, and gold when rotated under a lamp. Ex: Leo Meloche.
