Ludger Gravel (1864-1933) was a Montreal merchant and an avid numismatist who served as a governor of the Montreal Antiquarian and Numismatic Society beginning in 1904. Lot of four (4) medals. The group includes: 1.) First Prize in Arithmetic. 50.2mm. 61.96g. Cornucopia and BRONZE on edge (struck at the Paris Mint after 1879). Signed BRENET.  This appears to be a much scarcer medal that may precede the usual variety with jugate portraits of Sylvester II and King Solomon. Both the Suffel and Hendler sales lacked an example. This is a perfectly preserved unnamed example with brassy olive-gold surfaces. 2.) Premier Prix d’Arithmetique. 38.3mm. 24.88g. Plain edge. Signed CARON MONTREAL. The usual variety with jugate portraits of Pope Sylvester II and King Solomon. Original redness remains, and there are colourful accents on the reverse. 3.) Société des Artisans Canadiens Francais - First Convention. 1906. Charlton-2840-75-5. 33.7mm. 15.79g. Plain edge with loop at 12 o’clock. Signed CARON MONTREAL. Red-brown surfaces. 4.) Société des Artisans Canadiens Francais - 1910 Convention. Charlton-Unlisted. 33.7mm. 9.68g. Plain edge. Signed CARON FRERES MONTREAL. Possibly cleaned at some point.
